Auto Version Increment

Thursday, August 30th, 2012

Today’s SolidWorks Enterprise PDM post comes from a cool little API idea Lou Gallo dropped on me:

poInfo.mlAddInVersion = Now.ToString("yyyyMMdd")

Just like the fight club, if I have to explain it, you wouldn’t understand.

Simple EPDM interface

Tuesday, August 28th, 2012

“Everyone knows Windows Explorer.”

No, not everyone knows Windows Explorer. Some people find the Explorer interface too complicated. If you think about it, there is a lot of things displayed there. Then when you think of all the additional information SolidWorks Enterprise PDM adds, it may be a bit overwhelming to new Windows/computer users.

For those people who are not very good with Windows Explorer, make a simple search like the one above, drag the middle pane down so it completely covers the lower pane, and there you go. You can even hide the tool bars via the “View” menu. Can’t get an interface much simpler!

Even better, don’t forget you can even make a shortcut on their desktop go straight to this search so all they need to do is double click on the shortcut and they are finding the files in the vault in no time!

The target for the shorcut may look something like this:
"C:\Program Files\SolidWorks Enterprise PDM\Search.exe" /V:<vault name> /S:<Search Name> /HT /HP

As an example, here is what my shortcut looks like:
"C:\Program Files\SolidWorks Enterprise PDM\Search.exe" /V:Production /S:Simple /HT /HP

The “HT” and “HP” switches at the end, hide the preview and tree panes for you automatically!

Editing Toolbox settings slow?

Thursday, August 16th, 2012

I should have written this before SolidWorks 2012 because in the old days people were more affected by slow Toolbox editing than they are today…

If it takes a long time to modify your SolidWorks Toolbox settings, there could be something wrong with the Microsoft Access file that is used to store some of your settings. Microsoft Access has a tool, “Compact and Repair Database” that I’ve seen greatly increase the performance of your toolbox.

Find your SWBrowser.mdb file (“\lang\english\SWBrowser.mdb” by default) make a backup copy, then open the file file in Microsoft Access. Normally at this point I would help you find the “Compact and Repair Database” function within Access, but they have changed its location every release since Access 95. So I’ll leave it up to your “help file” navigation skills to find the command.

While we are on the subject…if you have other Access databases that you use rather often. I recommend you run this function on them every once in a while. You’ll sometimes see huge performance increases.

The Speed Myth – Perceptions vs. Reality

Monday, August 13th, 2012

You’re personally invited to attend a free webinar August 22nd at 9:00am or 2:00pm to understand the speed myth in 3D Printing. Before you make selection based on speed, make sure you understand what throttles it.

Listen as Todd Grimm, additive manufacturing industry analyst and consultant from T.A. Grimm & Associates, discusses 3D printing (aka additive manufacturing) and some of the myths about the “speed” of different additive manufacturing technologies.

What Will Be Covered:

– Time across the whole process, not just the speed of the build phase
– Automated or manual: what’s most important to you?
– What affects time: the many variables you need to consider
– Speed is relative to your other options and your needs
– What you should consider when evaluating additive manufacturing systems

Who Should Attend:

– Product Designers
– Design Engineers
– Production Engineers
– Manufacturing Engineers
– Operations Managers
– Educators

So don’t miss this educational webinar, August 22nd at 9:00am or 2:00pm.

RULERS in SolidWorks Drawing mode

Friday, August 10th, 2012

Want just a little more guidance of “where” you are at in a Drawing in SolidWorks ?

Most people have no idea about this option, so don’t be embarrassed.  :-)

Just go up to the VIEW pulldown menu, and towards the very bottom turn on RULERS !

Don’t forget you also have the cursor coordinate numbers at the bottom of the screen…  The rulers are just easier toquickly look at and understand where you are on the sheet, especially if you are zoomed in.

This is great for when you are sketching on a drawing or using snapping with the grid on a drawing.
